Until relatively recently humans were living in a sort of long-distance isolation from one another, mostly being focused on those present at the local level. If you were going to talk with your childhood friend who has moved to the other end of the United States, you’d give him an expensive phone call from time to time. However, the internet changed all of that, allowing us to overcome the spatial separation keeping people away from one another; information can now be delivered almost instantly from one point of the world to another, provided both of those points have internet access.
